Gerard Malanga worked closely with
Andy Warhol during that artist's most productive period during the
mid-sixties. The New York Times called him "Warhol's most important
associate". His several books of poetry, ranging from Chic Death (1971)
to Mythologies of the Heart (1996), have earned him worldwide
recognition. This book, Thermofax, includes reproductions of "The
Thermofax Series" of 25 artifacts that Malanga made by combining
original poems of his own with thermofax prints of photographs of
disasters stockpiled by Andy Warhol in connection with his "Death and
Disaster" paintings.

"Within the context of Factory
[Warhol's first studio from 1962 to 1968] activity, Andy Warhol and
Gerard Malanga worked together on a range of projects. In 1964-65,
photographs of deaths and disasters stockpiled by Warhol, particularly
car crashes, were copied on a Thermofax machine at the Factory. In the
space underneath each picture, Malanga wrote or typed his poems. Less
than twenty-five of these poems and images of death by Warhol and
Malanga are known to have been made"--Andy Warhol: Death and Disasters,
by Neil Printz (The Menil Collection, 1988, p. 24). Malanga was a major
influence on many of the paintings and films created in Warhol's studio
(The Factory). Besides starring in several Warhol films, he and Andy
collaborated on the nearly 500 individual 3-minute "Screen Tests," which
resulted in a selection for a book of the same name, published by
Kulchur Press (1967). A member of Warhol's multimedia extravaganza, "The
Exploding Plastic Inevitable," Malanga choreographed the music of the
Velvet Underground Live. In 1969, he and Warhol founded Interview.
