[CIVIL WAR]
General Sherman's entry into Columbia, South Carolina, February 17, 1865
Original front page from Harper's Weekly, April 1, 1865.
Page Size 16 x 11 inches.
Summary:
The Union captured Columbia on February 17–18, 1865 during the American Civil War's Carolinas Campaign. The city was a strategic target because it was a manufacturing center, a rail hub, and the state capital. It was also the symbolic origin point of the secession movement.
Sherman's forces maneuvered towards Columbia in early February 1865, splitting his forces to deceive the Confederates. The city surrendered to Sherman, and Wade Hampton's Confederate cavalry retreated. Much of the city was burned, though it's not clear which side was responsible.
