Description: Night scene of a Native American dance,
performed outdoors around an open fire. At far right, three men in
European garments look on. Washington, then aged sixteen and already active as a professional
surveyor, was traveling along the southern branch of the Potomac River
as part of a team led by George William Fairfax. They encountered a
group of Native Americans returning from war, and witnessed their dance
by firelight.
On heavy paper - blank on verso.
Overall size : 10 x 7 inches.
