 Includes entries from 1860-1866, covering the entire US Civil War (1861-65).

Smith Ely, M. D. was a resident of Newburgh, New York where he practiced medicine for his entire career. In 1859, Edwin D. Morgan, Governor of New York appointed Ely a surgeon of the 19th Regiment in the 7th Brigade in the 2nd Division of the New York State Militia. He was also appointed by the Governor in 1862 as a member of the Special Corps of Volunteer Surgeons.
